Face Mask Production

Prior to COVID-19 hitting Australian shores, I had dusted my sewing machine off and started sewing face masks to use at work, as I was having no luck in purchasing disposable ones from the usual outlets in China.

What started as a necessity to continue piercing, has now turned into a health necessity for everyone.  As such, my studio may be closed, but my dining room has been temporarily converted to a mask making factory.

Face Mask efficacy

There are many mixed messages out there in regards to how effective wearing face masks actually is.  I’ve done my research and the conclusion I have come to is this:

Wearing a face mask DOES NOT PREVENT YOU BREATHING AIR BORNE VIRUSES.  However, it does protect those around you from inhaling droplets from you, as you talk, cough, sneeze, or even breathe.

It is known that there is a two week incubation period for COVID-19, where you could quite feasibly be out and about, infecting others without knowing it.  If you wear a mask whenever you go out in public, you are protecting other people from that possibility.

Secondly, touching your face is known to be the number one way in which COVID-19 is transmitted.  Wearing a face mask provides a physical barrier to you touching your face.  It really is that simple.

How to Use Your Face Mask

My facemasks are made from cotton broadcloth and poplin.  They are machine washable and it is highly recommended that you wash your mask after each use, at a 60 degree temperature, using a biological washing detergent. 

Many people (including myself) have found that having a least two masks is beneficial as they can rotate one in the washing cycle while having a clean one ready for wear.
